Pool Cleaner Not Working?

There can be multiple reasons why your pool cleaner has stopped working.

We have listed a few common issues below that you can try troubleshooting. We do recommend speaking to one of our pool technicians to determine the problem and the best solution.

Suction Pool Cleaners

Suction pool cleaners are essentially an underwater vacuum cleaner. Using suction, they vacuum the debris straight into the skimmer box. There are a number of suction pool cleaners available and they are an ideal tool to save you time and effort in keeping your pool well maintained. Popular brands include Kreepy Krauly, Zodiac, Baracuda and Hayward. You can see a range of suction pool cleaners on our website.

If your Suction pool cleaner isn’t performing the way it should be, try these steps to resolve the problem.

  1. Disconnect pool cleaner from skimmer box and check if there is good suction at the skimmer box. If suction is very weak, please carry out checks to your filter and pump system refer to our Poor Water Circulation section.
  2. Check for any blockages in the cleaner throat and hoses. Generally, with Baracudas the yellow diaphragm will be worn or torn.
  3. Check for any wear and tear, especially the moving mechanism and the shoes (feet).

Pool Pressure Cleaner Not Working

Pool pressure cleaners are the work-horse, ideal for pools with large amounts of debris or surface areas needing cleaning. They can generally handle all surfaces and pool types and are driven by their own booster pump. These cleaners collect debris in a bag situated on top of the cleaner itself. Popular pressure cleaners for pools include Polaris, JetVac etc.

If your Pool pressure cleaner isn’t performing the way it should be, try these steps to resolve the problem.

  1. Check the booster pump is running normally and hose connections to the booster pump are good. Then check if there is adequate pressure from the booster pump at the cleaner wall fitting.
  2. Disconnect cleaner hose from wall fitting and clean the wall strainer
  3. For Polaris 280 pool cleaners, check the backup valve is not leaking. Normally this valve should be closed, allowing all water flow to the cleaner head. This valve will open very briefly at about 5-minute intervals to pull the cleaner out from corners. If you can see water coming out from this valve continuously, that means the valve is leaking and a new valve is required.
  4. For Jet Vac cleaners, make sure the jets are not blocked and the wheels are not too wobbly. There is an internal set of gears that Tongarra Pools can check to determine if they are working properly.
  5. If the problem persists you can take your cleaner to our shop for a thorough test and a quote to repair it.
